AMBITION UNLOCKED:
HELPING CHARITIES ACHIEVE TRANSFORMATIVE CHANGE

The vast majority of charities in the UK (98%) are smaller organisations with income of less than £5m per annum. They play a vital role in our society, often acting as ‘first responders’ to newly emerging needs at a local level, possessing a deep understanding of their communities. They also remain consistently agile, with quick decision-making processes based on flat and responsive organisational structures, and have greater involvement of people with lived experience.
However, despite their number, smaller charities yield only 25% of sector revenue. They often struggle to make ends meet and the idea of scaling their activities often remains nothing more than a pipe dream. We need a new approach to empower small and medium sized charities to scale, and ensure they are able to sustainably carry out their vital work.
Our approach:
The Breakthrough Programme is an innovative new product from Carsam Consulting, that sets out to create sustainable change for smaller charities, by strengthening their expertise, building their networks and empowering them to scale over a three to five-year period.
Our three-step model to building sustainable impact:
1. Investment, not support: In order to scale sustainably, smaller charities need to develop a compelling case for investment focused on the transformative growth of the organisation. This will enable them to demonstrate impact and become more appealing to funders.
2. Speaking with one voice: Carsam will help develop an integrated campaign, co-ordinating fundraising, communications and marketing activities to focus on achieving transformational growth. This will help to maximise promotional impact and turn the case
for support into a reality.
3. Recruit philanthropic ambassadors: Once the building blocks are in place, and the investment campaign is ready to implement, we will recruit a campaign board to help generate the lion’s share of the income required for growth. This will consist of passionate, engaged, high net worth individuals, with whom the cause strongly resonates. They will support the charity philanthropically and leverage their networks and expertise to help it scale.
